NJCTL Drives Faster Completion and Doubles Revenue Growth in Self-Paced Programs

About

New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning (NJCTL) is a self-paced, online graduate school preparing new teachers in high-need subjects like physics, math, chemistry, biology, and special education. Learners start any day of the year, move at their own speed, and often balance multiple jobs and family responsibilities.

The Challenge

NJCTL’s fully self-paced model offered flexibility, but it created a visibility problem.

Without a shared academic calendar, advisors had no clear way to determine whether learners were progressing at a pace aligned with their own certification goals. Learners were completing coursework slowly—an average of 0.6 credits per month—often without realizing how their current pace would affect long-term outcomes.

As a result:

  • Completion timelines stretched
  • Learners risked missing certification deadlines
  • Program revenue lagged
  • Advisors lacked clear, data-driven signals for timely intervention

NJCTL needed a way to support individualized timelines without imposing rigid deadlines or abandoning its self-paced philosophy.

The Strategy

NJCTL partnered with IntelliBoard to implement personalized pacing analytics designed specifically for asynchronous, self-paced learning.

Using IntelliBoard’s pacing reports, NJCTL:

  • Tracks each learner’s start date, target completion date, and required activities
  • Shows whether learners are on pace, ahead, or behind
  • Calculates the activities per day needed to finish on time
  • Provides advisors with group-level visibility and filtering to identify who needs outreach
  • Gives learners clear, transparent progress insights they can act on independently

Each learner receives an individualized pacing dashboard, while advisors and instructors access expanded views to guide supportive, data-informed conversations.

This strategy is now used across NJCTL’s U.S. programs and its international teacher-training initiatives in Africa.

The Results

The impact was immediate and measurable.

  • Learner pace increased from 0.6 to 1.4 credits per month, a 133% improvement in just 30 days
  • Faster course completion led to immediately doubling tuition revenue growth
  • More learners completed certifications on time, entering classrooms sooner
  • Advising conversations shifted from reactive and punitive to proactive and supportive
  • NJCTL now tracks hundreds of learners with individualized timelines—without a shared academic calendar

“Once learners could see the impact of today’s pace on their long-term goal, everything changed. Their completion rate doubled in one month.”

Bob Goodman, Executive Director, NJCTL

What’s Next

Building on the success of course-level pacing, NJCTL is working with IntelliBoard to expand pacing analytics to the program level.

The next phase will allow advisors and learners to:

  • View progress across entire programs, not just individual courses
  • Understand how current pacing affects overall graduation timelines
  • Support learners managing multiple programs simultaneously
  • Scale advising support as enrollment continues to grow

As NJCTL expands both domestically and internationally, pacing analytics remain a cornerstone of its strategy to deliver flexible education with measurable outcomes—for learners, institutions, and the workforce they serve.
